A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Gerard de Jode depicting a biblical vision from the Book of Revelation.
This engraving by Gerard de Jode depicts a vision from the Book of Revelation, specifically the scene of God seated upon a throne surrounded by the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders. The composition is contained within a circular frame, a common device in sixteenth-century printmaking to focus the viewer on the central theological narrative. De Jode employs precise, controlled lines to define the figures, the architectural elements of the throne, and the atmospheric rays emanating from the divine figure.
The iconography follows traditional biblical interpretations, showing the Lamb of God resting near the throne, holding a book. The surrounding figures are rendered with careful attention to their posture and gestures of adoration. The Latin text inscribed below the image provides context for the scene, referencing the opening of the seals and the redemption of the faithful. This print reflects the technical proficiency of the Antwerp school of printmakers, who were instrumental in the dissemination of religious imagery across Europe during the late sixteenth century.
As a cartographer and publisher, de Jode brought a high level of technical accuracy to his work. The engraving demonstrates the characteristic clarity and formal structure of the period. The decorative corners of the square frame balance the circular central image, creating a harmonious visual arrangement. This piece is a fine example of the intersection between devotional art and the print trade in the Netherlands, where such works were produced for both private contemplation and inclusion in larger illustrated volumes.
