A refined Japanese surimono woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei, depicting a goldfish in a glass vessel with accompanying poetry.
This woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei is a fine example of a surimono, a genre of privately commissioned prints often exchanged among poets and artists in Edo-period Japan. Unlike commercial prints produced for the mass market, surimono were created with high-quality materials, including metallic pigments and embossing, to demonstrate the technical skill of the printer and the refined taste of the patron.
The composition centres on a spherical glass vessel containing a single goldfish. The fish is rendered with subtle gradations of colour, known as bokashi, which suggest the curvature of the glass and the refraction of light through water. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the soft green tint of the water and the muted tones of the fish to dominate the visual field. A small cluster of camellia blossoms sits at the base of the bottle, providing a delicate contrast to the rounded form of the container.
In the upper left, a poem is inscribed in elegant calligraphy, a standard feature of the surimono format. The text integrates the visual subject with literary themes, common in the cultural circles of the time. Hokkei, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, was known for his ability to capture natural subjects with precision and grace. His work often reflects the sophisticated aesthetic preferences of the literati, who valued the combination of poetry and image. The print demonstrates the technical mastery of the woodblock medium, particularly in the handling of the transparent glass and the soft texture of the fish scales. The overall effect is one of quiet observation, capturing a moment of stillness within a domestic setting.
