Description
Goole in East Yorkshire joins the Ouse to a major inland navigation, where broad water, quays and working boats recall a port built to carry goods towards the Humber.
The port at Goole opened in 1826 where the Aire and Calder Navigation meets the River Ouse. In the East Riding of Yorkshire, this connection linked inland freight routes with the Humber waterways, establishing the town as a maritime port well upstream from the open sea.
A white vessel with a red funnel rests beside the left quay, while a dark low barge floats nearer the centre. Long reflections cross quiet blue water beneath cream cloud banks. Trees and pale buildings line the opposite bank, with warm roofs catching late light. The leafy shore and broad clear sky suggest a calm summer evening on the water.
