A study of the entombment by Dutch artist Jan Goeree, rendered in pen and grey wash.
This drawing by Jan Goeree depicts a traditional religious scene, the entombment of Christ. Goeree, a Dutch artist active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, was known for his work as an illustrator and draughtsman. His approach here reflects the conventions of the period, utilising a combination of pen and ink with grey wash to establish form and shadow. The composition is structured with a group of figures gathered around the central action, while the background features architectural elements that suggest a classical setting.
In the foreground, a figure stands to the left, observing the scene, while others attend to the body. The use of wash provides a sense of volume to the drapery and the figures, creating a tonal balance across the page. The inclusion of a cartouche at the bottom, framed by skulls, suggests this drawing may have been a preparatory study for a print or an engraving, a common practice for Goeree, who frequently produced designs for book illustrations. The lines are fluid and descriptive, typical of his draughtsmanship, which prioritised clarity and narrative flow over excessive detail. The scene is framed by a simple border, reinforcing its status as a finished study or a design for a larger graphic work. The overall atmosphere is one of solemnity, achieved through the restrained palette and the careful arrangement of the figures within the space.
