Description
A 1915 Cubist interpretation of the New York railway station by Max Weber. This work uses geometric planes and a muted palette to capture urban energy.
Max Weber painted Grand Central Terminal in 1915. This work is a clear example of early American modernism. Weber lived in Paris between 1905 and 1908. During this time, he studied with Henri Matisse and met Pablo Picasso. These encounters shaped his perspective on the New York urban environment.
The painting depicts the interior of the railway station using a Cubist method. Weber breaks the architectural forms into overlapping geometric planes. He employs a palette of ochre and grey with black accents. Small touches of red provide contrast against these neutral tones. The composition suggests the movement of a busy transit hub. Vertical lines and diagonal shards create a sense of upward energy.
Weber avoids a literal representation of the building. He captures the sensory experience of the city instead. The repetitive patterns of the windows and arches suggest the mechanical nature of modern life. This piece shows the influence of Italian Futurism through its focus on speed and dynamism. It belongs to Weber's Cubist period.
