Description
Great Dun Fell in Cumbria carries a white radar dome above broad gold slopes, with green fields and leafy valley trees beneath cream cloud banks in bright afternoon light late in summer.
This 848 metre mountain is the second highest summit in the Pennines, south of Cross Fell. The Pennine Way crosses its high ground after climbing from Dufton. A radar station on the summit forms part of the air traffic control system serving northern England and southern Scotland.
Great Dun Fell rises above rounded gold slopes to a small white spherical dome and low buildings. Thin aerials stand beside the summit installation. Green fields and scattered pale farms spread below the darker folds of the hillside, beyond a broad near tree belt. Cream cloud banks and dry upland grass suggest bright afternoon light towards summer’s close.
