An evocative oil painting by Jack Bush, capturing the moody atmosphere of the Mattawa region through expressive brushwork and a muted, earthy palette.
Grey Day – Mattawa captures a specific atmospheric quality of the Canadian wilderness. Jack Bush, a member of the Painters Eleven, is often associated with his later colour-field abstractions, yet this earlier work demonstrates his engagement with the physical environment and the traditions of Canadian representational painting. The composition focuses on a church structure, rendered with heavy, deliberate brushwork that conveys the weight of the architecture against the shifting weather.
The palette is dominated by muted greys, slate blues, and earthy greens, reflecting the overcast conditions of the Mattawa region. Bush employs a direct application of paint, allowing the texture of the board to interact with the pigment. The white picket fence in the foreground provides a geometric contrast to the organic, rolling forms of the hills behind the church. The sky is treated with broad, sweeping strokes, suggesting the movement of clouds and the dampness of the air.
This piece offers a glimpse into the formative years of an artist who would eventually move toward a more reductive visual language. Here, the focus remains on the interpretation of a specific site through a lens of personal observation. The work avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a synthesis of form and mood. It is a study in tonal relationships, where the interplay between the cool, neutral tones of the architecture and the deeper, saturated greens of the terrain creates a sense of spatial depth. The artist's signature is visible in the lower left, marking this as a piece from his earlier career when he was actively exploring the possibilities of oil paint to capture the character of the Canadian terrain.
