A sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting the Grand Prince of Moscow and a Muscovite officer in traditional attire.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn, a Flemish printmaker active in Antwerp, depicts two figures of the Muscovite court. The work originates from a broader series documenting international costume, a popular genre during the late sixteenth century. The left figure represents the Grand Prince of Moscow, mounted on horseback and holding a staff of office. The right figure shows a Muscovite officer, also mounted, carrying a mace. Both figures wear elaborate, fur-trimmed garments and tall, feathered headgear, reflecting the European fascination with the exotic attire of the East during this period.
De Bruyn employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of the period. The cross-hatching and fine lines define the texture of the horses' manes, the heavy fabrics of the robes, and the decorative patterns on the saddles. The composition is structured as two distinct panels, each containing a figure set against a simple ground line. This arrangement allows for a clear comparison of the two social ranks. The inscriptions at the base of each figure provide identification in both German and Latin, a common practice for prints intended for a wide, international audience of collectors and scholars.
This print offers a glimpse into the sixteenth-century European perception of Russian nobility and military dress. While the artist likely relied on secondary accounts or existing illustrations rather than direct observation, the work provides a record of how these figures were visualised in the Low Countries. The print demonstrates the technical skill of de Bruyn, who was known for his ability to render complex textures and patterns within a small format. The work remains a useful document for those interested in the history of costume and the dissemination of ethnographic imagery in early modern Europe.
