A raw, expressionist group portrait by Richard Gerstl, capturing the composer Arnold Schönberg and his circle with aggressive, gestural brushwork.
Richard Gerstl painted this work in 1908, shortly before his death. It depicts the composer Arnold Schönberg and his circle. The composition features a group of figures arranged against a background of acidic, yellow-green paint. Gerstl applies pigment with thick, gestural brushwork, prioritising emotional intensity over anatomical precision. The faces are rendered with minimal detail, appearing as masks or blurred impressions rather than traditional likenesses.
This painting documents the close, albeit volatile, relationship between Gerstl and the Schönberg family. The artist spent significant time with the composer and his wife, Mathilde, during the summer of 1908. The application of paint is aggressive and immediate, reflecting the psychological tension present in the artist's life at the time. The figures seem to merge into one another, creating a sense of claustrophobia and unease. The palette is dominated by harsh yellows and muted earth tones, which contrast with the lighter garments worn by the subjects.
Gerstl remains an outlier in the Viennese art scene of the early twentieth century. He rejected the decorative tendencies of the Secessionists, opting instead for a raw, subjective approach to the human form. This work is a primary example of his late style, where the physical act of painting becomes as important as the subject matter itself. The lack of clear definition in the figures suggests a dissolution of the self, a theme that permeates much of his final output. By stripping away the conventions of portraiture, Gerstl forces the viewer to confront the raw materiality of the paint and the underlying anxiety of the scene.
