Published in 1811, the work functions as a pedagogical guide for students interested in the techniques of Chinese-style ink painting, or bunjinga. The pages demonstrate specific brush methods for rendering trees, a fundamental skill in the literati tradition.

The left panel illustrates the 'T-head' method, where branches are constructed with angular, repetitive strokes that resemble the character for 'T'. The right panel displays the 'Hōtō' or '蓬頭' method, which focuses on the cluster-like arrangement of foliage and branches. Bunpō employs a calligraphic line quality, balancing the weight of the ink to suggest texture and volume without the use of colour. The composition is sparse, prioritising the clarity of the brushwork over atmospheric depth.
