Description
A classic example of Synthetic Cubism by Juan Gris, featuring a guitar and fruit bowl arranged in a precise, geometric composition.
Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. This work, dated 1918, demonstrates his methodical approach to the genre. Unlike the fragmented, multi-perspective works of early Cubism, Gris sought a more architectural order. He constructed his compositions through a rigorous process of geometric analysis, where objects are broken down into their essential forms and then reassembled on the canvas.
The composition features a guitar, a fruit bowl, and a sheet of music, all arranged upon a table. Gris employs a palette of ochre, black, and grey, which allows the viewer to focus on the structural relationships between the objects. The guitar is depicted with a characteristic blend of flat planes and recognisable contours, while the fruit bowl serves as a central anchor for the surrounding geometric shapes. The sheet of music adds a linear element that contrasts with the curved forms of the instrument and the bowl.
Gris often described his method as painting from the abstract to the particular. He began with a mathematical grid or a set of geometric relationships, only introducing the specific objects of the still life once the underlying structure was established. This technique results in a sense of balance and clarity that distinguishes his work from that of his contemporaries. The texture of the paint remains visible, providing a tactile quality to the flat surfaces. By 1918, Gris had refined his visual language to achieve a high degree of precision, moving away from the more chaotic experiments of his earlier career. This piece captures his mature style, where the tension between the two-dimensional surface and the three-dimensional subject matter is resolved through careful calculation and a disciplined application of colour.
