Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Analytical Cubism. This work, dated 1912, demonstrates his rigorous approach to the fragmentation of form. Unlike the more spontaneous works of his contemporaries, Gris applied a mathematical precision to his compositions. He often began with a geometric grid, allowing the objects to emerge from the structure rather than imposing them upon a pre-existing space.
