Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. In this work, he applies his rigorous approach to the still life genre. The composition deconstructs the form of a guitar, placing it upon a chair to create a complex arrangement of overlapping planes and geometric shapes. Unlike the earlier, more fragmented Analytic Cubism, this piece employs a clearer structure where individual elements remain identifiable despite their abstraction.

The palette is restrained, relying on ochre, brown, and muted violet tones to define the spatial relationships between the objects. Gris uses a systematic method of construction, where the guitar body, the chair, and the surrounding environment are flattened into a series of interlocking surfaces.
