A fine art print of a Hadis-i Şerîf manuscript by the master Ottoman calligrapher Sheikh Hamdullah, featuring precise Naskh script and gold illumination.
This piece displays the mastery of Sheikh Hamdullah, a figure who redefined the aesthetic standards of Ottoman calligraphy. Working during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, Hamdullah refined the Naskh script, moving away from the heavier styles of his predecessors towards a more balanced and fluid form. This specific manuscript page features a Hadis-i Şerîf, or a recorded saying of the Prophet, rendered with precision and clarity.
The text is arranged in horizontal lines, demonstrating the rhythmic spacing characteristic of the master's hand. The ink remains dark against the aged paper, while small gold discs act as punctuation marks between phrases. These markers provide a visual pause, guiding the reader through the moral and philosophical content of the text. The border, painted in a muted ochre tone, frames the central block of writing, maintaining a focus on the script itself.
Hamdullah's influence on the development of the Ottoman school of calligraphy is immense. His approach prioritised legibility and grace, qualities that became the benchmark for subsequent generations of scribes. By standardising the proportions of the letters, he created a system that allowed for both technical rigour and individual expression. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the subtle variations in the ink, offering a view into the tradition of Islamic manuscript production. It is a study in discipline, where every stroke serves the clarity of the message. The work reflects the high status of the written word in Ottoman culture, where calligraphy was considered the highest form of visual art. This reproduction maintains the integrity of the original composition, allowing for an appreciation of the letterforms and the historical context of the Ottoman period.
