A 1937 abstract composition by Paul Klee, featuring rhythmic black calligraphic lines against a segmented ochre and green background.
Halme, painted by Paul Klee in 1937, represents the artist's late-period exploration of sign-like forms and rhythmic composition. During this time, Klee moved away from the more representational imagery of his earlier career, favouring a vocabulary of simplified, hieroglyphic marks. The work features bold, black calligraphic lines set against a segmented background of ochre and pale green. These shapes do not depict objects in a traditional sense, but rather suggest a visual language or a musical score translated into paint.
Klee often compared his creative process to the growth of a plant, where the artist acts as a conduit for natural forces. In this piece, the heavy, dark lines appear to float or drift across the surface, creating a sense of movement that is both deliberate and spontaneous. The interaction between the flat colour fields and the gestural lines creates a tension between the foreground and the background, preventing the eye from settling on a single point. This approach reflects his interest in the fundamental elements of visual art: line, tone, and plane.
By 1937, Klee was living in Switzerland, having left Germany due to the political climate. His work from these final years often displays a reduction in complexity, focusing on clarity and the essential nature of form. The title, Halme, translates from German as 'stalks' or 'blades of grass', offering a clue to the organic inspiration behind these abstract configurations. The print captures the texture of the original paint application, preserving the raw quality of Klee's brushwork. It is a study in balance and economy, demonstrating how a few well-placed marks can define a space without the need for literal representation.
