A detailed 18th-century etching by Jean Moyreau after Antoine Watteau, depicting a group of soldiers and civilians resting in a wooded encampment.
This fine etching and engraving by Jean Moyreau, titled 'Halt' or 'Alte Copiarum Quies', reproduces an original painting by the celebrated French artist Antoine Watteau. Moyreau was a skilled printmaker who played a significant role in disseminating the aesthetic of the Rococo period through his reproductions of contemporary masters. The composition depicts a group of soldiers and civilians resting in a wooded area, a common theme in the military genre scenes of the eighteenth century.
The scene is structured around a large, central tree that provides shade for the figures gathered below. To the left, soldiers attend to a fire, while others sit or recline on the grass. A woman in a light-coloured dress stands near the centre, her back to the viewer, creating a sense of casual movement within the static group. The figures are rendered with delicate lines, capturing the textures of their clothing and the dappled light filtering through the foliage. The background features a horse and a cart, suggesting a temporary encampment during a march.
Moyreau’s technique demonstrates the precision required for high-quality reproduction in the eighteenth century. He uses varied hatching to create depth and volume, particularly in the shadows cast by the tree and the folds of the garments. The inclusion of Latin and French text beneath the image identifies the work as a faithful reproduction of a painting by Watteau, reflecting the practice of creating prints to document and circulate art from private collections. This print offers a glimpse into the social and military life of the era, presented with the grace and attention to detail characteristic of the period.
