A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni I, capturing the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojo III in the role of the courtesan Koman.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni I depicts the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojo III in the role of the courtesan Koman. It belongs to the series Portraits of Actors on Stage, a collection that captured the theatrical culture of Edo-period Japan. Toyokuni I was a central figure in the Utagawa school, and his work during this period helped define the aesthetic of actor prints, or yakusha-e.
The composition focuses on the figure of the actor, who is rendered with a sense of poise and theatricality. The artist uses a restrained colour palette, allowing the form of the kimono and the posture of the subject to communicate the character's identity. The actor is shown in a standing pose, with the heavy, dark obi contrasting against the lighter, muted green tones of the garment. The fine lines of the hair and the delicate facial features are characteristic of the period's printmaking techniques, where the carver and printer worked in close coordination with the artist to achieve precise results.
Segawa Kikunojo III was a celebrated onnagata, an actor who specialised in female roles. In this print, the artist captures the specific mannerisms associated with the courtesan Koman, balancing the artifice of the stage with a sense of individual presence. The background remains neutral, a common convention in these prints to ensure the viewer's attention remains on the actor's costume and expression. This work provides a window into the popular culture of the late 18th century, where the theatre and the print market were closely linked. The print is a representative example of the Utagawa school's approach to portraiture, which prioritised clarity of line and the depiction of specific stage personas over naturalistic representation.
