Penfield's illustration of a hammer throw athlete captures the rotational force of one of track and field's most physically demanding events. The figure is shown in the act of spinning, preparing to release the weight.
The hammer throw was included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and was dominated by Irish-American athletes for the first two decades of Olympic competition. John Flanagan won three consecutive Olympic gold medals (1900, 1904, 1908) for the United States. The event drew large crowds at athletic meets because of the visible drama of the throw: an athlete spinning in tight circles before releasing a heavy weight to travel over 50 metres.
Penfield's sporting subjects from this period reflect the growing cultural status of athletics in American life, as universities, athletic clubs, and the new Olympic movement brought competitive sport into the mainstream. His hammer throw illustration captures the moment of maximum tension, just before release, when the athlete's body is twisted and the weight is at full extension. The circular motion of the throw is particularly well suited to Penfield's graphic style, which could suggest dynamic movement through the positioning of a single figure.
Often called the father of the American poster, Penfield served as art director of Harper's Magazine from 1890 to 1901, producing over 100 cover designs during that period. His style drew on Japanese woodblock printing and the French affiche tradition: flat areas of colour, bold outlines, and minimal detail. He became one of the most recognised illustrators of the American Art Nouveau movement, and his wartime posters remain some of the most widely studied examples of early 20th-century graphic propaganda.
