A 1916 modernist still life by Marsden Hartley, featuring simplified forms, bold primary colours, and typographic elements.
Painted in 1916, Handsome Drinks is a characteristic example of Marsden Hartley's work during his time in Berlin. The composition features a collection of vessels arranged upon a dark, circular tabletop, set against a stark, light-coloured background. Hartley employs a flattened perspective, prioritising the graphic quality of the objects over traditional three-dimensional modelling. The forms are simplified, bordering on the schematic, with bold outlines and a deliberate application of paint that emphasises the physical surface of the canvas.
The inclusion of the letters LUS and LOGH, flanking the central red chalice, introduces a typographic element that reflects the influence of Synthetic Cubism and the artist's interest in the visual language of commercial signage. These letters, likely fragments of the word 'LUSCH' (a German term for a type of drink or a colloquialism), serve as structural components within the frame rather than mere narrative additions. The palette is restricted to primary colours, with the deep red of the central vessel providing a strong contrast against the dark table and the pale, textured background.
Hartley's approach to this still life demonstrates his engagement with European avant-garde movements, particularly the work of the Der Blaue Reiter group. By reducing the objects to their essential shapes and focusing on the interplay of colour and line, he creates a composition that feels both immediate and detached. The work avoids the sentimentality often associated with traditional still life painting, opting instead for a rigorous, almost industrial aesthetic. This piece captures a specific moment in the artist's career, where his exposure to the urban environment of Berlin and the experimental art scene of the early twentieth century converged to produce a distinct, modern visual vocabulary.
