Description

A psychological double portrait by Oskar Kokoschka, capturing art historians Hans Tietze and Erica Tietze-Conrat through raw, emotive brushwork.

Painted in 1909, this double portrait depicts the art historians Hans Tietze and Erica Tietze-Conrat. Oskar Kokoschka, a central figure in the Viennese avant-garde, captures the couple with a psychological intensity that defines his early period. The work departs from traditional portraiture, focusing instead on the internal state of the subjects through agitated brushwork and a raw, emotive application of paint.

Hans Tietze is shown in profile, leaning toward his wife, while Erica Tietze-Conrat faces the viewer with a gaze that appears distant and introspective. Their hands are positioned centrally, rendered with nervous, elongated strokes that suggest a tactile, almost restless energy. The background is composed of swirling, atmospheric layers of ochre, burnt orange, and deep brown, which seem to press against the figures, creating a sense of claustrophobia and emotional friction.

Kokoschka employs a technique of scratching into the wet paint, a method that reveals the underlying layers and adds a physical texture to the surface. This approach strips away the veneer of bourgeois respectability often associated with portraiture of the era. The figures are not merely recorded in their likeness; they are presented as psychological entities caught in a moment of quiet, yet palpable, tension. The colour palette is dominated by earth tones and muted purples, which contribute to the somber, reflective mood of the composition. This piece remains a primary example of how the artist used the human form to explore the anxieties of the early twentieth century, moving away from the decorative tendencies of the Secessionist movement toward a more subjective, visceral style of representation.

Artist Biography

Oskar Kokoschka

Kokoschka proposed to Alma Mahler within twenty-four hours of meeting her in 1912. When she later had an abortion, he pocketed a bloodied cotton pad from the procedure, saying it was his only child and always would be. He painted The Bride of the Wind (1913-14) as a double portrait of the two of them, then sold it to buy his own horse before volunteering for the First World War.

He was born in 1886 in Pochlarn, Austria. He was shot through the head in Ukraine and bayoneted in the chest in Russia. He survived both.

After the war, he commissioned a Munich dollmaker named Hermine Moos to create a life-size replica of Alma, sending detailed instructions about the feel of her skin and the weight of her body. Moos covered the figure in feathers instead. Kokoschka eventually staged a public execution: he decapitated the doll and smashed a bottle of wine over its head on his lawn. The police arrived the next morning, thinking he had murdered a woman.

The Nazis declared him a degenerate artist. He fled Czechoslovakia for London after the Munich Agreement and became a British citizen in 1947. His Expressionist portraits are among the most psychologically penetrating of the twentieth century: raw, agitated surfaces that seem to expose the sitter's interior state. He lived to ninety-four.
