Georges Seurat painted this view of the Normandy coast during the summer of 1888. It is one of a series of six canvases he produced while visiting the small fishing port of Port-en-Bessin. The work demonstrates his systematic application of colour theory, utilising the technique known as pointillism. Small, distinct dots of pigment are placed side by side on the canvas, allowing the viewer's eye to blend them optically from a distance.
The composition is structured with geometric precision. The horizontal line of the harbour wall and the vertical masts of the boats create a stable, balanced arrangement. Seurat captures the specific light of the English Channel, using a palette of cool blues, soft greens, and warm ochres to define the cliffs and the water. The sky is rendered in lighter, airy tones, contrasting with the more saturated colours of the grassy foreground and the stone buildings.
Unlike the spontaneous brushwork of the Impressionists, Seurat's approach is calculated and deliberate. He sought to bring a scientific rigour to painting, focusing on the interaction of complementary colours to create luminosity.
