A striking mid-century composition by Rafael Zabaleta featuring two figures in commedia dell'arte costume, rendered with bold lines and a saturated palette.
Rafael Zabaleta, a painter from Quesada in the province of Jaén, developed a distinct visual language that often engaged with the rural life of Andalusia and the traditions of European modernism. This work depicts two figures dressed in the traditional costumes of the commedia dell'arte, a recurring theme in his oeuvre. The harlequin, positioned in the foreground, wears a characteristic diamond-patterned tunic, while the clown beside him wears a ruffled collar and a mask. The composition is structured around a table holding a bottle and fruit, elements that ground the theatrical subjects in a domestic or tavern setting.
Zabaleta employs a firm, structured approach to form, using bold outlines to define his subjects. His application of paint is deliberate, creating a sense of solidity in the figures. The colour palette is composed of primary and secondary tones, applied with a degree of saturation that gives the scene a theatrical quality. The background contains secondary figures, suggesting a wider social context beyond the immediate interaction of the two primary subjects.
Throughout his career, Zabaleta moved away from the influence of early twentieth-century avant-garde movements to create a personal style that balanced abstraction with representational clarity. His work often features a degree of distortion in the anatomy of his subjects, which serves to heighten the expressive nature of the scene. This painting captures the melancholic yet performative spirit often associated with the harlequin motif in art history. The interplay between the masked and unmasked faces invites the viewer to consider the duality of the performer, caught between the artifice of the costume and the reality of the human expression. The work remains a representative example of his mid-century output, demonstrating his ability to synthesise classical themes with a modern, graphic sensibility.
