In the foreground, a Harlequin figure stands to the left, his costume a geometric pattern of primary colours. Opposite him, a skeletal figure draped in a black cloak adorned with white teardrops occupies the right side of the frame. This personification of Death acts as a silent observer. Between them, in the middle distance, a couple embraces under a dark, star-filled sky. The scene is framed by birch trees and golden foliage, which create a proscenium-like effect, drawing the viewer into a staged, dreamlike environment.

Somov employs a precise, graphic technique that reflects his interest in eighteenth-century rococo aesthetics and the darker undercurrents of European symbolism. The contrast between the dense, ink-like darkness of the night sky and the delicate, decorative treatment of the leaves demonstrates his technical control.
