Description
Hartside Pass looks down a sinuous upland road from a white summit marker, with purple-brown fells and evening cloud making the high route feel open and remote.
The pale concrete pillar stands on a dry-stone base amid large dark boulders, its weathered sides catching the last gold light. Below it, the road doubles back through broad moorland folds, with a steep escarpment at left and soft rose cloud layers above.
Hartside Pass is known for the long climb and the distant ground it reveals across the North Pennines. The image suits anyone who has paused at the top, where the road, rough stone and broad fell country meet. Its bends carry the eye onwards through the open country.
