A refined woodblock print by Matsuki Heikichi, capturing a hawk with a sparrow on a snow-laden pine branch in the traditional kacho-ga style.
This woodblock print by Matsuki Heikichi depicts a hawk perched upon a snow-covered pine branch, clutching a small sparrow. The composition adheres to the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the depiction of birds and flowers. The artist employs a muted colour palette, relying on subtle gradations of grey and brown to suggest a cold, winter atmosphere. The background features a soft, atmospheric wash, which provides a sense of depth without distracting from the primary subjects.
The hawk is rendered with attention to the texture of its plumage, using fine lines to delineate the feathers. The contrast between the dark, heavy pine needles and the lighter, snow-dusted branches creates a visual balance. The sparrow, held firmly in the hawk's talons, is depicted with a degree of realism that is characteristic of the Shin-hanga movement. This movement sought to revitalise traditional Japanese printmaking by incorporating Western elements, such as atmospheric perspective and light effects, while maintaining the technical precision of the ukiyo-e tradition.
Matsuki Heikichi was a publisher and artist active during the late Meiji and Taisho periods. His work often reflects the technical mastery of the woodblock medium, particularly in the application of bokashi, or colour gradation. The print demonstrates a careful observation of nature, capturing a fleeting moment of predation within a quiet, wintry setting. The lack of excessive detail in the background allows the viewer to focus on the interaction between the two birds, making it a study in both form and narrative economy. The print is a representative example of the aesthetic values prevalent in early twentieth-century Japanese print culture, where traditional subjects were reinterpreted through a modern lens.
