Description
Hawkshead in Cumbria overlooks pale slate roofed cottages from a tall carved stone cross, with pink flowers below green fields and blue distant fells on a clear late spring afternoon.
This Lakeland village lies north of Esthwaite Water between Windermere and Coniston Water. Once owned by Furness Abbey, it became an important medieval wool market. Its grammar school was founded in 1585, later educating William Wordsworth, while a royal market charter followed in 1608.
Hawkshead spreads pale and pink cottages with grey slate roofs below a tall carved stone cross. Repeated chimney pots rise among leafy gardens, with green fields climbing towards blue distant fells. Pink blossom and low flowers fill the near churchyard slope. Soft white clouds leave wide clear gaps, suggesting a bright late spring afternoon over the compact village roofs.
