A detailed 1565 genre painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, capturing the agricultural activities and rural atmosphere of the summer season.
Haymaking is a panel painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, completed in 1565. It forms part of a series depicting the months of the year, a common theme in medieval and early modern art. The composition captures the labour of the summer season, focusing on the agricultural activities of peasants in a rural setting.
The scene is divided into distinct zones. In the foreground, figures carry baskets of produce and tools, moving across a warm, earthy path. To the left, workers gather hay, while the middle ground reveals a village with small houses and a church. The background opens into a wide, atmospheric vista, showing rolling hills and a distant river under a summer sky. Bruegel employs a high horizon line, a technique that allows for an expansive view of the terrain and the various tasks performed by the inhabitants.
Unlike many works of the period that focused on religious or mythological subjects, this painting documents the daily life of the working class. The figures are rendered with a sense of naturalism, their postures and clothing reflecting the practicalities of their environment. The colour palette relies on golden yellows, soft greens, and muted blues, which unify the scene and suggest the warmth of the season. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Lobkowicz Palace in Prague. It remains a significant example of the artist's ability to integrate human activity into the broader context of the natural world, demonstrating his observation of seasonal change and its effect on the rural community.
