A study of light and rural form, this Impressionist work by Lilla Cabot Perry captures the quiet atmosphere of Giverny through broken brushwork and a balanced palette.
Lilla Cabot Perry, an American painter who spent significant time in France, produced this work during her residency in Giverny. Living near Claude Monet, she adopted the Impressionist approach to light and colour. This painting captures the rural surroundings of the village, focusing on the agricultural structures that were a common subject for artists in the region at the time.
The composition relies on the interplay of light across the surface of the haystacks. Perry uses short, broken brushstrokes to build the form of the stacks, allowing the eye to blend the colours from a distance. The palette shifts from the warm, golden tones of the foreground to the cooler, shadowed blues and purples of the buildings and the distant trees. The sky is rendered with a soft, pale wash, suggesting the transition of light during the late afternoon or early morning.
Unlike the more rigid structures of academic painting, this work prioritises the atmospheric conditions of the scene. The texture of the paint is visible, reflecting the physical act of application. Perry demonstrates a keen observation of how natural light alters the perception of simple, everyday objects. By placing the haystacks as the primary subject, she invites the viewer to consider the quiet, rhythmic nature of rural life in the late nineteenth century. The work remains a clear example of the American adaptation of French Impressionist techniques, demonstrating a focus on optical experience rather than precise detail.
