A refined woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei, capturing the anatomical detail of a salmon head in the traditional surimono style.
This print by Totoya Hokkei depicts the head of a salmon, suspended by a rope through its gills. Hokkei was a prominent pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, and his work often appeared in the form of surimono: privately commissioned, limited-edition woodblock prints. These were typically produced for poetry circles or special occasions, allowing artists to experiment with refined printing techniques, such as metallic pigments, embossing, and high-quality paper.
The composition is minimalist, focusing entirely on the subject against a plain background. The salmon head is rendered with precision, capturing the texture of the scales and the sharp, serrated teeth. The rope, looping upwards, provides a vertical counterpoint to the diagonal orientation of the fish. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy, likely a poem or a reference to the commissioning group, integrates text into the visual field, a common practice in Edo-period print culture. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, greys, and muted earth tones to convey the freshness of the subject.
Surimono prints like this one demonstrate the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked alongside the artist. The subtle gradations of colour and the clean lines reflect the high standards of the period. This piece serves as a fine example of the genre, where the mundane subject matter is elevated through artistic treatment and technical execution. It offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the literati circles in nineteenth-century Japan, where such prints were exchanged as tokens of appreciation or as part of a shared cultural activity. The work remains a clear representation of the intersection between poetry and visual art in the Ukiyo-e tradition.
