A delicate crayon-manner engraving by Louis-Marin Bonnet, capturing a portrait of a woman with soft, painterly textures.
This print by Louis-Marin Bonnet is a fine example of the crayon-manner engraving technique, a process developed in the eighteenth century to mimic the appearance of chalk drawings. Bonnet was a master of this medium, often working to reproduce the works of his contemporaries, such as François Boucher. The subject, traditionally identified as Mme. Deshayes, is depicted with a soft, atmospheric quality that captures the light on her skin and the texture of her hair.
The composition focuses on the sitter's profile, turned towards the viewer with a gentle expression. Bonnet uses a delicate layering of tones to create depth, moving away from the harsh lines of traditional copperplate engraving. The blue tones of the background and the ribbon in her hair contrast with the warm, peach-coloured fabric of her bodice. A small floral accent rests near her shoulder, adding a touch of natural detail to the portrait.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision required to translate the fluid marks of a chalk sketch into a repeatable format. The subtle gradations of shadow across the neck and cheek illustrate the capabilities of the crayon-manner process. This work reflects the aesthetic preferences of the French Rococo period, where grace, lightness, and a focus on the human form were central to artistic production. The inscription at the base of the print confirms its origin as a reproduction of a painting by Boucher, then held in the collection of Monsieur Soufflot. It remains a representative piece of the printmaking culture in Paris during the late eighteenth century, showing the technical skill involved in bringing painterly qualities to the printed page.
