A character study by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, this chalk drawing captures a young man in profile with a gun, showcasing the artist's mastery of light and shadow.
This work by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta demonstrates the artist's mastery of the 'carattere' or character study, a genre he popularised in eighteenth-century Venice. Executed in black and white chalk on paper, the drawing captures a young man in profile, his gaze directed downward. The presence of a gun slung over his shoulder suggests a rustic or hunting theme, which was a common subject for Piazzetta's genre studies.
Piazzetta utilised the medium to create strong contrasts between light and shadow. By applying white chalk highlights against the mid-tone of the paper, he achieved a sense of volume and texture in the young man's features and clothing. The lines are fluid, showing the artist's confidence in anatomical rendering and his ability to convey personality through subtle shifts in expression. Unlike formal portraiture of the period, this study focuses on the immediacy of the subject, presenting a figure that feels observed from life rather than posed in a studio.
The artist was known for his influence on the Venetian school, particularly through his teaching at the Scuola di Nudo. His approach to drawing, characterised by soft transitions and dramatic chiaroscuro, moved away from the rigid academic styles of the previous century. This specific drawing reflects the technical precision that defined his career, where the economy of marks allows the viewer to perceive the weight of the fabric and the structure of the face with clarity. The work remains a fine example of the Venetian tradition of chalk drawing, where the paper itself acts as a necessary component of the final image, providing the base tone upon which the artist builds his composition.
