A detailed 1791 etching by Johann Christian Reinhart, capturing the anatomy and texture of an ox with precise line work.
Johann Christian Reinhart, a German painter and etcher, produced this study of an ox in 1791. The work demonstrates his technical proficiency in the medium of etching, a process he utilised to capture the physical characteristics of animals with precision. The composition focuses entirely on the animal's head, presented in a frontal view that allows for a detailed examination of its features.
Reinhart employs a variety of line weights to define the texture of the ox's coat. The curls between the horns are rendered with tight, rhythmic strokes, while the shading around the muzzle and eyes uses denser cross-hatching to suggest volume and depth. The animal's expression is captured with a directness that avoids sentimentality, reflecting the artist's interest in natural observation during his early career. The clear, stark lines against the paper surface provide a sense of clarity, typical of the period's approach to anatomical drawing.
This etching belongs to a tradition of animal studies that were often produced by artists to refine their skills in rendering form and texture. Reinhart, who later moved to Rome and became associated with the circle of artists around Asmus Jacob Carstens, maintained a consistent interest in the natural world throughout his career. This print offers a view into the disciplined practice of an artist working at the end of the eighteenth century, where the study of nature was a primary concern for those seeking to master the representation of the physical world. The work is signed and dated in the lower right corner, confirming its origin during his formative years.
