An engraving by Agostino Carracci, this work features a headpiece design in the shape of a fan, decorated with a portrait, cherubic figures, and a pastoral scene.
This engraving by Agostino Carracci presents a headpiece design shaped like a fan. Carracci, an Italian painter, printmaker, and draughtsman, was a significant figure in the development of the Bolognese School of painting. He, along with his brother Annibale Carracci and cousin Ludovico Carracci, founded the Accademia degli Incamminati, an art academy that promoted a return to classical principles and naturalism. Agostino was celebrated for his skill as a printmaker and his contributions to the development of reproductive engraving. The headpiece design is elaborately decorated with a central portrait of a woman, framed by ornamental motifs, including cherubic figures and grotesque masks. Below the portrait, a small, detailed scene depicts a pastoral setting with figures and animals. The upper portion of the fan is adorned with a cloud-like mass of curls or feathers, adding to the overall sense of opulence. The engraving demonstrates Carracci's mastery of line and his ability to create depth and texture through intricate cross-hatching.
