A minimalist geometric composition by Romanian Op Art pioneer Roman Cotosman, featuring rhythmic black vertical forms that create a sense of movement.
Roman Cotosman was a Romanian artist associated with the development of kinetic and optical art during the mid-twentieth century. His practice focused on the mathematical arrangement of geometric forms to explore the relationship between rhythm, space, and visual perception. In this work, titled Heartbeats, Cotosman employs a series of four vertical black rectangles set against a stark white background. The composition relies on the precise alignment and slight displacement of these forms to create a sense of movement.
The visual effect is one of controlled tension. By introducing subtle breaks in the vertical edges of the black bars, the artist disrupts the expected continuity of the shapes. This technique forces the eye to adjust its focus, creating a flickering sensation that mimics the rhythmic pulse suggested by the title. Cotosman often utilised seriality to investigate how repetition can alter the viewer's experience of a static image. The work avoids representational imagery, choosing instead to engage with the fundamental properties of shape and contrast.
As a practitioner of geometric abstraction, Cotosman sought to remove the subjective hand of the artist from the final output. The clean lines and high-contrast palette reflect the aesthetic priorities of the period, where clarity and structural logic were paramount. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to generate complex optical phenomena through minimal means. The interaction between the solid black masses and the negative space of the paper creates a dynamic field that shifts depending on the distance of the observer. It is a study in balance and visual cadence, stripped of unnecessary detail to allow the structural arrangement to communicate directly with the viewer.
