A refined eighteenth-century etching by Domenico Cunego, depicting the goddess Hebe serving the eagle of Jupiter.
This fine etching and engraving by Domenico Cunego depicts the Greek goddess Hebe, the cupbearer to the gods. The composition is based on a painting by Gavin Hamilton, which was held in the collection of the Earl of Exeter. Cunego, a skilled Italian printmaker, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of varied line weights and cross-hatching to render the soft folds of drapery and the textured plumage of the eagle.
Hebe is shown in profile, leaning forward to pour nectar into a shallow vessel held by the eagle of Jupiter. The scene draws upon classical mythology, capturing a quiet moment of service. The figure of Hebe is rendered with the idealised proportions characteristic of the Neoclassical period, reflecting the era's fascination with antiquity and the revival of classical themes in European art. The background remains relatively simple, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the goddess and the bird.
Cunego was active in Rome during the mid-eighteenth century, a period when the city served as a centre for artists and collectors participating in the Grand Tour. His work often involved reproducing paintings by contemporary masters, such as Hamilton, for a wider audience. This print captures the refined aesthetic of the time, balancing anatomical precision with a sense of narrative grace. The inclusion of the Latin inscription, 'Poculum Jovis aliti subministrat', translates to 'She serves the cup to the bird of Jupiter', providing context for the mythological subject. The print is a representative example of the high-quality reproductive engraving produced in Italy during the eighteenth century, intended for both scholarly study and private collection.
