Description
Hedon in East Yorkshire preserves the scale of a medieval port town, its great church rising above red roofs and green fields where a prosperous Norman settlement once grew.
Founded around 1130 by William le Gros, Hedon developed as an important port and market town in Holderness. Its planned grid of streets survives in the centre, while the rise of Hull and the silting of the haven later reduced its maritime trade.
A tall pale church tower stands above clustered houses, its pinnacles silhouetted against blue sky. Red and orange roofs spread between dark trees, beyond open green fields in the foreground. White flowers rise beside a short timber fence at the lower edge. Full foliage and soft cloud shadows suggest a bright summer day, with the church dominating an otherwise low rural horizon.
