A delicate seventeenth-century Dutch illustration featuring calligraphic poetry alongside a miniature painting of a gentleman and Cupid.
This delicate work originates from the personal album of Gesina ter Borch, a Dutch artist active during the seventeenth century. The page features a combination of calligraphic poetry and small, hand-painted illustrations. The text, written in a flowing script, explores themes of unrequited love and social standing, common motifs in the literary culture of the period.
To the right of the verses, a small figure of Cupid is depicted in flight, aiming his bow. Below him stands a gentleman, rendered with careful attention to the fashion of the era. He wears a wide-brimmed hat adorned with a feather, a doublet, and breeches, leaning on a walking stick. The figure is small in scale, typical of the marginalia found in personal albums or 'poëziealbums' of the Dutch Golden Age. The artist uses a restrained palette, allowing the fine ink lines to define the form and character of the subject.
Gesina ter Borch was a member of a prominent artistic family in Deventer. Her work provides a window into the private life and intellectual pursuits of a woman in the seventeenth-century Netherlands. Unlike the large-scale oil paintings produced by her brother, Gerard ter Borch, her output often consisted of these intimate, paper-based compositions. This piece demonstrates her skill in both penmanship and miniature painting, capturing a moment of quiet reflection on the nature of affection and status. The composition is sparse, prioritising the relationship between the written word and the visual accompaniment, a hallmark of the album tradition.
