A delicate seventeenth-century watercolour and ink illustration by Gesina ter Borch, featuring a gentleman and lady alongside elegant calligraphic verse.
This delicate work by Gesina ter Borch originates from her personal album, a collection of drawings, poems, and transcriptions that offer a rare glimpse into the private life and cultural interests of a seventeenth-century Dutch woman. The composition features a gentleman and a lady, rendered in watercolour and ink, positioned at the base of a page filled with elegant, calligraphic Dutch verse. The figures are depicted in the fashionable attire of the period, with the gentleman wearing a wide-brimmed hat adorned with feathers and the lady in a structured gown, reflecting the sartorial habits of the Dutch elite.
Ter Borch, the sister of the painter Gerard ter Borch, was an accomplished amateur artist who documented the social rituals and romantic sentiments of her circle. Her style is characterised by a precise, observational approach to costume and gesture. The figures stand in a simple, unadorned space, allowing the viewer to focus on their interaction and the accompanying text. The calligraphy itself is a significant component of the work, demonstrating the importance of literacy and literary expression in the domestic sphere of the Dutch Golden Age. This piece functions as both a visual record of contemporary fashion and a personal expression of the artist's engagement with the poetic traditions of her time. The muted palette and fine line work are typical of her small-scale, intimate drawings, which were intended for private viewing rather than public display. By preserving these moments, Ter Borch provides a window into the social dynamics and aesthetic preferences of the mid-seventeenth-century Netherlands.
