A woodblock triptych by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting an imagined interior in St. Petersburg, created during the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e that emerged during the late Edo period to satisfy Japanese curiosity regarding foreign lands. As Japan ended its isolationist policy, artists produced these works to document the appearance of Western cities, people, and customs. This specific triptych depicts an imagined interior of a building in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Yoshitora employs a hybrid aesthetic in this composition. While the figures are rendered in a style reminiscent of traditional Japanese woodblock prints, the architectural setting attempts to incorporate Western perspective and structural elements. The artist uses a series of columns, arched doorways, and vaulted ceilings to suggest a grand, European-style interior. The figures, dressed in what the artist interpreted as Russian attire, move through the space, providing a sense of scale to the ornate surroundings.
The colour palette is characteristic of the period, utilising mineral pigments that have aged to create a balanced, muted appearance. The print is divided into three panels, a common format for large-scale narrative scenes in Japanese printmaking. The upper left corner features a cartouche containing text that provides context for the viewer, explaining the location and the nature of the series. This work offers a view into how mid-nineteenth-century Japan visualised the distant capital of the Russian Empire, blending factual observation with artistic imagination. It remains a record of the cultural exchange and the fascination with the outside world that defined the final years of the shogunate.
