A fifteenth-century woodcut depicting Saint Agnes with her traditional attributes, rendered in a bold, graphic style with hand-applied colour.
This woodcut depicts Saint Agnes, a figure identified by her traditional attributes: the palm branch of martyrdom and the lamb, which serves as a pun on her name. Attributed to the Master of the Mount of Olives from the Dutuit Collection, this print exemplifies the early German woodcut tradition of the late fifteenth century. The artist employs a direct, graphic approach, using bold outlines to define the figure of the saint and her companion animal. The composition is deliberately flat, prioritising symbolic clarity over spatial depth.
The hand-colouring applied to the print uses a restrained palette, focusing on the red of the saint's garments and the green of the ground. Such prints were often produced for devotional purposes, intended for a lay audience who sought affordable religious imagery for private prayer. The lines are thick and functional, characteristic of the woodblock medium where the artist carved away the negative space to leave the image in relief. The saint wears a crown, signifying her status as a virgin martyr, while her gaze remains calm and directed towards the viewer.
This work belongs to a period when printmaking began to democratise religious art, moving away from the exclusive domain of illuminated manuscripts and panel paintings. The simplicity of the form reflects the technical constraints of the medium, yet it retains a clear narrative function. By focusing on the essential iconography of Saint Agnes, the artist ensures the subject is immediately recognisable. The paper texture and the slight irregularities in the ink application provide a tactile quality that is lost in modern reproductions, making this a representative example of early European print culture.
