A detailed etching by Hermanus Jan Hendrik Rijkelijkhuizen depicting a solitary angler in a boat on a quiet Dutch waterway.
This etching by the Dutch artist Hermanus Jan Hendrik Rijkelijkhuizen captures a quiet moment on a waterway. The composition is anchored by two large, mature trees on the left bank, their foliage rendered with dense, looping lines that suggest the texture of leaves and the weight of branches. The artist employs a variety of mark-making techniques to differentiate between the rough bark of the trunks, the soft reeds at the water's edge, and the calm surface of the canal.
In the distance, a small windmill is visible on the horizon, a characteristic element of the Dutch countryside. A solitary figure sits in a small boat, holding a fishing rod, positioned towards the lower right of the frame. The scale of the boat relative to the towering trees emphasises the vastness of the natural environment. The etching demonstrates a clear focus on atmospheric perspective, with the foreground elements drawn with greater weight and detail, while the background elements remain lighter and less defined.
Rijkelijkhuizen was active during the nineteenth century, a period when Dutch printmakers often looked back to the traditions of the Golden Age for inspiration. This work reflects that interest in the rural vernacular, focusing on the everyday activities of people within their environment. The use of line is precise, allowing the viewer to observe the structure of the trees and the stillness of the water. The print is presented with a clear plate mark, typical of traditional intaglio printing methods. It offers a view into a specific, tranquil moment, devoid of dramatic action, relying instead on the balance of light and shadow created through the etched lines.
