A refined seventeenth-century engraving by Robert Nanteuil, depicting the French official Henri de Guénégaud with technical precision and formal elegance.
This engraving by Robert Nanteuil depicts Henri de Guénégaud, a prominent figure in the French administration during the seventeenth century. Nanteuil, a master of the burin, achieved a level of technical precision that defined the portraiture of the era. The work is based on a painting by Philippe de Champaigne, as indicated by the inscription 'Champaigne pinx' at the base of the oval frame.
The composition follows the conventions of formal portraiture, presenting the subject within a trompe-l'oeil oval frame. Nanteuil employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to render the textures of the subject's clothing, the lace collar, and the soft curls of his hair. The shading around the face provides a sense of volume, while the steady gaze of the sitter conveys a sense of authority and composure. Below the portrait, the inclusion of a coat of arms, supported by two lions, adds a heraldic element that identifies the subject's status and lineage.
Nanteuil was the official portraitist to Louis XIV, and his ability to capture the likeness and character of the French aristocracy made him the most sought-after engraver of his time. This print demonstrates his command over light and shadow, creating a balanced image that avoids excessive ornamentation while maintaining a high degree of detail. The clarity of the lines and the subtle gradation of tone reflect the rigorous standards of the French school of engraving during the mid-seventeenth century. This piece offers a clear view into the aesthetic values of the period, where the focus remained on the psychological presence of the sitter and the refined execution of the printmaker's craft.
