An eighteenth-century engraving by Lorenzo Zucchi, depicting the Saxon statesman Heinrich von Brühl within an ornate, heraldic cartouche.
This engraving by Lorenzo Zucchi depicts Heinrich von Brühl, a powerful Saxon statesman and art collector of the eighteenth century. Zucchi, an Italian engraver who spent much of his career in Dresden, demonstrates his technical proficiency in this work. The portrait is framed within an elaborate oval cartouche, a common device in period printmaking to elevate the status of the sitter. The frame is adorned with foliate motifs and floral garlands, reflecting the decorative sensibilities of the mid-eighteenth century. Below the portrait, a scroll displays the coat of arms of the Count, accompanied by a detailed Latin inscription that lists his various titles and offices.
The composition is based on a painting by Stefano Torelli, as indicated by the inscription 'Step. Torelli pinx.' at the bottom left. Zucchi employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to render the textures of the Count's velvet coat, the lace cravat, and the powdered wig. The play of light across the sitter's face and the surrounding architectural elements creates a sense of volume and presence. The print serves as a record of the visual culture surrounding the Saxon court, where portraiture was used to communicate political authority and social standing. The inclusion of the heraldic elements and the formal Latin text reinforces the public persona of the subject. This piece provides a clear example of the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers during the period, where the printmaker acted as the primary medium for disseminating the likeness of the aristocracy to a wider audience.
