Description
A detailed seventeenth-century engraving of Henrietta Maria by Dutch master Jonas Suyderhoef, based on a portrait by Anthony van Dyck.
This engraving by Jonas Suyderhoef depicts Henrietta Maria, Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Suyderhoef was a Dutch engraver known for his technical precision and his ability to translate the painterly qualities of oil portraits into the medium of print. This work is based on a painting by Anthony van Dyck, whose influence on the visual representation of the Stuart court was immense. The portrait captures the Queen in a formal, bust-length pose, framed by an elaborate cartouche of fruit and foliage. The composition reflects the conventions of seventeenth-century royal portraiture. The Queen is shown with her characteristic ringlets and a pearl necklace, her expression composed and direct. Suyderhoef employs a variety of hatching techniques to render the textures of her lace collar and the soft contours of her face. The surrounding decorative border, which includes swags of grapes and flowers, adds a sense of opulence and structure to the print. Below the portrait, a Latin inscription identifies the subject and her titles, a common feature in prints intended for circulation among the European aristocracy and collectors of the period. Suyderhoef worked primarily in Haarlem and was a member of the Guild of Saint Luke. His prints were often produced after the works of contemporary masters, allowing for the wider dissemination of royal and noble imagery. This particular engraving demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Dutch printmaking tradition, where the engraver acted as both a technician and an interpreter of the original artist's vision. The print remains a record of the visual culture of the mid-seventeenth century, documenting the fashion and formal portrait style favoured by the British monarchy during the reign of Charles I.
