A fine mezzotint portrait of Henry Phipps, 1st Earl of Mulgrave, by the British engraver Charles Turner, dating to 1808.
This mezzotint by Charles Turner depicts Henry Phipps, 1st Earl of Mulgrave, a prominent British statesman who served as First Lord of the Admiralty during the Napoleonic Wars. Turner, a master of the mezzotint process, captures the subject with a soft, atmospheric quality that defines the medium. The print relies on the subtle graduation of tone, moving from deep, velvety blacks in the coat to the delicate, luminous highlights on the face and cravat.
The portrait follows the conventions of early nineteenth-century aristocratic representation. Phipps is shown in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed toward the viewer with a composed, steady expression. The background remains indistinct, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the sitter. Turner's technical skill is evident in the way he renders the texture of the fabric and the subtle modelling of the facial features, achieving a sense of volume without the use of harsh outlines.
Charles Turner was a prolific engraver, known for his ability to translate oil paintings into print with great fidelity. This work demonstrates his capacity to manage light and shadow, a skill that made him a preferred collaborator for many painters of the period. The print provides a clear example of the high standard of British printmaking during the Regency era. It functions as a historical record of a political figure, presented through the refined aesthetic of the mezzotint technique. The tonal depth achieved here is characteristic of the period's preference for dramatic, painterly effects in reproductive printmaking, ensuring the subject appears both dignified and accessible.
