A classic paper silhouette portrait of the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, created by the renowned French artist Auguste Edouart.
This silhouette depicts the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, captured in profile by the French artist Auguste Edouart. Edouart was a master of the silhouette, a medium that gained popularity in the nineteenth century as a precise method for recording a subject's likeness. Unlike many of his contemporaries who relied on mechanical tracing devices, Edouart cut his figures freehand from black paper, often adding subtle details with ink or pencil to suggest texture and form.
In this work, Longfellow is shown standing in a formal frock coat, holding a top hat in his left hand. The profile view emphasises the distinct contours of his facial features and his posture. Edouart’s technique involved observing the subject and then cutting the paper with remarkable speed and accuracy. This approach allowed him to capture the essence of a person's character through their physical outline alone. The stark contrast between the black figure and the white background is the defining characteristic of the silhouette, a form that prioritises shape over colour or tone.
During his time in the United States, Edouart produced thousands of these portraits, documenting a wide range of public figures and private citizens. His work provides a visual record of the fashion and social customs of the era. This particular portrait of Longfellow reflects the poet's status during his mid-career, presenting him with the refined appearance expected of a literary figure of his time. The simplicity of the composition directs the viewer's attention entirely to the silhouette's form, demonstrating the effectiveness of this minimalist approach to portraiture. By focusing on the outline, Edouart creates a recognisable image that relies on the viewer's ability to identify the subject through their unique physical silhouette.
