A 1545 engraving by Hans Sebald Beham depicting Hercules and Iolaus in their battle against the multi-headed Hydra.
This engraving by Hans Sebald Beham, dated 1545, depicts the second labour of Hercules. The scene shows the hero alongside his nephew, Iolaus, confronting the multi-headed Lernaean Hydra. Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, was highly skilled in producing small-scale, technically precise prints that appealed to collectors of the sixteenth century.
Hercules is positioned on the left, wielding his club, while Iolaus assists by cauterising the stumps of the severed heads with a torch. The composition is contained within a wooded setting, with the figures rendered in a muscular, classical style typical of the period. The Latin inscription at the top, 'HERCVLES VNA CVM IOLAO HYDRAM OCCIDIT', identifies the subject clearly. Beham’s monogram, 'ISB', appears in the upper right corner alongside the date.
Technically, the work demonstrates the fine line-work characteristic of German Renaissance printmaking. The artist uses cross-hatching to create volume in the figures and depth in the surrounding foliage. The Hydra is depicted with several serpentine necks, each terminating in a distinct head, creating a sense of chaotic movement that contrasts with the controlled stances of the two men. This print is part of a series detailing the various tasks assigned to the hero. It reflects the period's fascination with classical mythology and the technical capabilities of the copperplate engraving process. The balance between the narrative action and the decorative treatment of the forest background demonstrates the artist's ability to manage complex scenes within a compact format.
