Antonio Tempesta, a Florentine painter and printmaker, produced this etching depicting the second labour of Hercules. The composition captures the hero in the act of confronting the multi-headed serpent, the Hydra, within the marshes of Lerna. Hercules is shown from behind, his muscular form draped in the Nemean lion skin, while he wields his characteristic club. Smoke and flames billow in the background, suggesting the cauterisation of the stumps that Tempesta includes as part of the narrative sequence.
