A powerful depiction of the mythological hero Hercules in combat, painted by the Spanish master Francisco de Zurbarán in 1634.
Francisco de Zurbarán painted this work as part of a series depicting the Labours of Hercules for the Hall of Realms in the Buen Retiro Palace, Madrid. Commissioned by Philip IV, the cycle was intended to glorify the Spanish monarchy through the allegorical strength of the mythological hero.
Zurbarán, known primarily for his religious compositions and still-life paintings, approaches this mythological subject with his characteristic focus on form and light. The composition centres on the physical struggle between Hercules and the Nemean lion. The artist employs a tenebrist approach, where the figures emerge from a dark, cavernous background. This technique directs the viewer's attention to the muscular anatomy of the hero and the tension within the wrestling match.
Unlike the more dynamic, swirling compositions typical of Italian Baroque painters, Zurbarán presents the scene with a sense of stillness and sculptural weight. The anatomy of Hercules is rendered with precision, reflecting the artist's study of classical models. The lion, while fierce, is depicted with a degree of naturalism that balances the heroic narrative. The palette is restrained, relying on earth tones, deep shadows, and highlights that define the contours of the figures. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to adapt his style to secular, courtly commissions while maintaining the gravity and technical rigour that define his broader body of work. The painting remains a clear example of the Spanish Golden Age approach to classical themes, prioritising clarity of form and dramatic lighting over excessive movement.
