A detailed calligraphic study by Theodoor Wilkens, documenting the historical Tomb of the Horatii and Curiatii in Albano through elegant Italian script.
This work by Theodoor Wilkens presents a calligraphic inscription detailing the historical site known as the Tomb of the Horatii and Curiatii in Albano. Wilkens, a Dutch artist active during the early eighteenth century, spent a significant period in Italy, where he produced numerous drawings documenting the classical ruins surrounding Rome. His practice often combined precise topographical observation with a refined, fluid hand in ink.
The text on this sheet serves as a scholarly record, referencing the account of the legendary duel between the Roman Horatii and the Alban Curiatii as described by the historian Titus Livius. The script is executed with a consistent, elegant pressure, demonstrating the artist's skill in formal penmanship. The paper shows signs of age, including foxing and minor discolouration, which provide a sense of the document's history as a working study or a collector's record from the Grand Tour era.
Unlike his more expansive vedute, this piece focuses on the textual documentation of a site rather than its architectural depiction. It reflects the period's fascination with classical antiquity and the desire to link physical ruins to specific literary sources. The composition is minimal, prioritising the clarity of the Italian inscription over decorative elements. This print captures the intellectual rigour of an artist engaged in the study of Roman history, offering a glimpse into the scholarly pursuits that informed the artistic output of Northern European painters working in Italy during the eighteenth century.
